A tri-annual International Conference in Honour of Aleksandras Vanagas, academician, one of key specialists in Lithuanian onomastics, director of the Institute of the Lithuanian Language. The Conference is devoted to issues of onomastics.

Applied research

 

In 2007 the most comprehensive web-based Geoinformational Database of Toponyms (Vietovardžių geoinformacinė duomenų bazė) was started. Resources of onomastics

 

  • A card index of toponyms collected from contemporary Lithuanian (600,000 items). It is the foundation for the new etymological Dictionary of Lithuanian Toponyms (Lietuvos vietovardžių žodynas).
  • A card index of toponyms collected from historical sources (300,000 items).
  • A card index of surnames, collected from contemporary Lithuanian (260 000 items). It laid the foundation for the etymological Dictionary of Lithuanian Surnames (Lietuvių pavardžių žodynas).
  • A card index of personal names collected from historical sources (200,000 items).
  • A card index of other names (nicknames—50,000 items, zoonyms etc.).

The resources are open for researchers of Lithuania and other countries for research purposes.

Scientific events

 

International conferences focusing on the issues of Lituanica

 

The Fifth International Conference focusing on the research of the cultural heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, 2008, organised in co-operation with Bishop Antanas Baranauskas’ Foundation Lietuvių namai (Sejny) and the Foundation Pogranicze (Sejny). Previous conferences were held in Budapest (1996, 1998, 2000) and Brest (2004). Carrying on the Hungarian tradition, the Lituanica Group for the first time in history organises a conference in 2008 on the GDL cultural heritage in Lithuania.
