|
The project is aimed at developing a multilingual information environment, mobilising the community that develops language technologies and resources, establishing an open infrastructure of linguistic resources, technologies and tools in the Baltic and Nordic countries, which can be tailored to the needs of science and business. It is a part of the larger European infrastructure, META-NET, which covers the Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian and Swedish languages that have fewer than 10 million users. The key idea behind the META-NET project is to develop the technological foundation of the multilingual information society in Europe, create a community with a common vision and strategic goals for research, establish an infrastructure of open access to resources, develop ties among language-related technologies and create a single European digital market. Technology developers, research establishments, individual scientists and their groups, representatives of business and industry, private investors, academic communities are all invited to join in META-NET. There are 31 European states involved in the infrastructure under development. The coordinator of the Nordic and Baltic project META-NORD is Tilde (Latvia), its partners are the Institute of the Lithuanian Language (Lithuania), Bergen University (the Netherlands), Helsinki University (Finland), the University of Iceland (Iceland), Goteborg University (Sweden), Copenhagen University (Denmark) and Tartu University (Estonia). The project was launched in February 2011. For more information about the project, visit http://www.meta-net.eu/projects/meta-nord/.
