On March 27, 2012 the parliament of the Republic of Lithuania passed a resolution declaring 2013 the Year of Dialects. The resolution says that the decision was made as a result of the parliament’s approval of the European Union’s urge to preserve local languages, and of the fact that the “living dialectal tradition is dwindling rapidly in Lithuania”.
