The Library of the Institute of the Lithuanian Language is a structural unit of the Hearth of Lithuanian Studies. The Library was opened in 2006. It stores linguistic publications in Lithuanian, Polish, Russian, English, German and other languages.

Its distinctive feature is that it collects and stores new linguistic resources in English and other languages on a systematic basis.

The Library keeps collections of books of the most outstanding Lithuanian linguists: Prof. Valerijus Čekmonas, Dr Kazys Eigminas, Prof. Kazimieras Kuzavinis, Dr Jonas Paulauskas etc.

In 2007 the Archive of Linguists was opened; it collects and stores valuable materials such as manuscripts, card indices, letters, other documents, awards of best-known linguists of Lithuania and other countries.

Archives of Linguists. In Lithuania archives of linguists have never been collected, managed and stored on a systematic basis. In 2007 the Archive of Linguists was opened at the Institute of the Lithuanian Language. Modern depositories store the archives of Jonas Paulauskas (1923-2003), a major lexicographer of Lithuania, Elena Grinaveckienė (1928-1999), a famous dialectologist, Kazimieras Ulvydas (1910-1996), one of the authors of the academic edition of the Lithuanian Grammar (Lietuvių kalbos gramatika), editor of the Dictionary of Lithuanian (Lietuvių kalbos žodynas), Jonas Kruopas, a famous terminologist and lexicographer, editor of the Dictionary of Lithuanian (Lietuvių kalbos žodynas) and others. The Archive also keeps part of the Lithuanian archive of Vladimir Toporov (1928-2005), a world-known specialist in Baltic and Indo-European languages and mythologist.

 

The Reading Room of the Library invites researchers and students to use the resources and gain access to the latest publications on linguistics. Some of them are only available in our library.
